Vitamin E for Skin Health

Strong evidence 45 studies

Research suggests that vitamin E may play a meaningful role in supporting skin health, particularly through its antioxidant properties that help neutralize free radicals generated by UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental stressors. A 2021 meta-analysis pooling data from 20 studies found that individuals with chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne consistently showed lower serum vitamin E levels compared to healthy controls, though this reflects association rather than cause and effect. Supporting reviews from 2018, 2023, 2024, and 2025 further indicate that vitamin E, alongside other antioxidants, contributes to mechanisms such as reducing inflammation, supporting collagen integrity, and offering photoprotection, with some authors suggesting that combining dietary intake with topical application may be more effective than either approach alone. However, important limitations exist across this body of evidence: most supporting studies are narrative reviews rather than controlled trials, a 2019 randomized controlled trial showing skin improvements used a multi-ingredient supplement making it impossible to isolate vitamin E's contribution, no clear consensus exists on optimal dosing, and researchers consistently call for more rigorous clinical investigation before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
