Vitamin E for Immune Function

Moderate evidence 45 studies

Research suggests that vitamin E plays a meaningful role in supporting immune function, with a 1988 review reporting that deficiency impairs immune responses and that supplementation above standard nutritional levels may enhance immunity, in part by counteracting the immunosuppressive effects of high polyunsaturated fat intake and selenium deficiency. A broader 2021 narrative review synthesizing 87 clinical trials found that vitamin E was among several nutrients capable of modulating key immune and inflammatory markers, though results were not consistent across all populations or health conditions. A 2024 cross-sectional study using NHANES data found that moderate-to-high blood levels of vitamin E were associated with a lower risk of bacterial vaginosis, suggesting a possible immune-related protective effect, while a separate 2024 review noted that vitamin E showed inconsistent results in the context of surgical wound healing and immune recovery. Overall, the available evidence spans a range of study types — including narrative reviews, cross-sectional analyses, and clinical trial summaries — and while the general direction leans supportive, the findings are not uniform, and researchers consistently note that individual health status, nutritional context, and interactions with other nutrients may significantly influence outcomes.
