Sage for Memory

Strong evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that sage, particularly Salvia officinalis and related species, may support memory and cognitive function through several proposed mechanisms, including inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine) and interactions with the cholinergic signaling system. Studies indicate that animal research — including mouse and rat models — consistently shows improvements in memory retention tasks with sage extracts, while human evidence, though more limited, is cautiously supportive: a randomized controlled crossover study in healthy older adults found that a standardized sage extract improved secondary memory performance, and a 2017 review of the broader Salvia genus concluded that multiple species contain bioactive compounds with promising cognitive-enhancing and neuroprotective properties. A small pilot trial testing a combined herbal formula containing sage in older adults produced mixed results overall, with benefits emerging only in a subgroup analysis, highlighting the need for larger and more rigorous human trials. The body of evidence tilts in a positive direction but remains preliminary, with most findings drawn from animal studies, small sample sizes, and short intervention periods, and several studies included in the linked materials were unrelated to sage or cognition and did not contribute meaningfully to evaluating this use.
