Research suggests that saffron extract may play a role in appetite control and reducing snacking behavior, with the available evidence drawing from a combination of randomized controlled trials in human populations, animal studies, mechanistic investigations, and traditional medicine reviews, all pointing broadly in a supportive direction. The most frequently cited human trial, a 2010 placebo-controlled RCT, found that a proprietary saffron extract called Satiereal significantly reduced snacking frequency and increased feelings of satiety in overweight women, and subsequent RCTs in cardiovascular patient populations reported similar reductions in energy intake and improved appetite scores. Animal studies add supporting mechanistic context, with rodent models showing reduced food consumption following saffron or crocin administration, and one 2020 computational study proposed that crocin may act on GLP-1 receptors involved in satiety signaling. That said, the body of clinical evidence remains relatively limited in scale and scope, several studies were conducted in specific patient populations rather than healthy adults, and the overall evidence base has not yet been subjected to a formal quantitative meta-analysis focused specifically on appetite outcomes, so conclusions should be regarded as preliminary.
