Postbiotics (General) for Gut Health

Moderate evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that postbiotics — preparations of inactivated microorganisms or their components — show promise for supporting gut health by improving microbial composition, gut structure, immune markers, and fermentation-related outcomes, based on a body of evidence that includes a 2026 systematic review, two 2024 narrative reviews, and a 2024 randomized controlled trial conducted in dogs. The systematic review and narrative reviews draw largely on animal studies, particularly in pigs and poultry, finding associations between postbiotic supplementation and improved immune function, reduced inflammation, and better gut microbial diversity, while the dog RCT found more modest effects — modest shifts in bacterial composition and increased beneficial short-chain fatty acids — with no significant changes in blood sugar regulation, overall microbial diversity, or inflammatory markers. Two additional 2023 studies included in the linked literature were tangentially related at best, examining gut microbiome changes in liver disease progression and an incidental finding involving a carbohydrate carrier in a mitochondrial disease model, neither of which directly evaluated postbiotics for gut health. Overall, the evidence is preliminary and largely confined to animal populations, with researchers consistently calling for more rigorously characterized postbiotic formulations, better-designed trials in relevant species including humans, and clearer dose and timing parameters before broader conclusions can be drawn.
