Research suggests that Lactobacillus plantarum may support immune function through several mechanisms, including enhancing antibody production such as IgA and IgG, modulating inflammatory cytokines, and favorably shifting gut microbiome composition in ways that appear to influence immune signaling. Studies indicate these effects have been observed across a range of models, including randomized controlled trials in children with celiac autoimmunity, mouse studies involving immune suppression and brain injury, poultry and livestock feeding trials, and laboratory cell experiments examining inflammatory pathways in macrophages, with the general direction of findings being supportive. A 2016 randomized double-blind trial in healthy adults produced more modest results, with several immune-related trends failing to reach statistical significance, and some animal and insect studies included in the broader evidence base showed inconsistent or neutral findings, underscoring that not all contexts yield the same benefits. The majority of controlled human evidence remains limited in scope and duration, and while the mechanistic picture is becoming clearer, further large-scale human trials are needed before strong conclusions about the magnitude or clinical significance of these immune effects can be drawn.
