Inulin for Weight Management

Strong evidence 16 studies

Research suggests that inulin and related fructan fibers may offer modest support for weight management, with a 2024 meta-analysis of 32 randomized controlled trials finding statistically significant reductions in body weight, BMI, fat mass, and waist circumference associated with chicory inulin-type fructan supplementation, and several additional studies — including a 2015 randomized controlled trial in prediabetic adults and a 2024 RCT combining inulin with other fibers — pointing to benefits such as continued weight loss, reduced appetite-regulating hormones, and lower organ fat deposits. Studies indicate that these effects may be amplified when inulin is combined with other fibers or with certain probiotic strains, and reviews of human clinical trials broadly support a link between fructan intake and weight-related outcomes, though a 2026 systematic review found inulin's effects more limited and inconsistent compared to other nutraceuticals like L-carnitine. The overall body of evidence spans meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, and narrative reviews and is generally supportive, but important caveats apply: effect sizes tend to be modest, gastrointestinal side effects such as flatulence and bloating are commonly reported, at least one small RCT found no effect on appetite or calorie intake, and notable variability across studies in design, population, and outcome measurement means that conclusions should be interpreted with caution. One study also found that inulin was poorly fermented by the disrupted gut microbiota of severely malnourished children, suggesting that the fiber's benefits may depend heavily on the health and composition of an individual's existing gut microbial community.
