Dan Shen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza) for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) demonstrates meaningful antioxidant activity across a range of preclinical models, with studies pointing to several of its active compounds — particularly salvianolic acid B, danshensu, rosmarinic acid, and salvianolic acid A — as key drivers of this effect. The available evidence consists entirely of laboratory and animal studies, including investigations into oxidative stress in heart, brain, and kidney tissue, as well as mechanistic work identifying a specific cellular pathway (PI3K/Akt/Nrf2/HO-1) through which Danshen appears to reduce reactive oxygen species in immune cells. Studies also indicate that the method of preparation influences antioxidant potency, with microwave-assisted extraction and nanotechnology processing both shown to affect the availability of active compounds compared to conventional methods. Because all reviewed studies are preclinical in nature — none are human clinical trials or meta-analyses — it is not yet possible to draw firm conclusions about how these findings translate to antioxidant effects in people, and further research in human populations would be needed to assess real-world relevance.
