Cardamom for Blood Pressure Regulation

Strong evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that cardamom may have blood pressure-lowering effects, with support coming from a range of study types including animal studies, in vitro mechanistic research, a 2009 randomized controlled trial in stage 1 hypertensive patients, and a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling data from eight randomized clinical trials that found modest reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure alongside decreases in inflammatory markers. Animal and laboratory studies point to plausible biological mechanisms, including modulation of nitric oxide levels, calcium channel activity, and reduction of oxidative stress, while a 2023 meta-analysis specifically found significant effects on diastolic blood pressure in metabolic syndrome patients. However, the evidence is not uniformly positive — two randomized controlled trials, one in pre-diabetic women and one in type 2 diabetes patients, found no statistically significant between-group reductions in blood pressure, and reviewers across multiple papers consistently note that the overall body of human clinical trial evidence remains small and methodologically limited. Studies indicate that while the direction of findings is generally favorable, firmer conclusions about cardamom's role in blood pressure regulation await larger and more rigorously controlled human trials.
