However, the evidence base has notable limitations: much of the supporting data comes from animal studies in poultry, piglets, mealworms, and fish rather than human clinical trials, and some findings are mixed, with one study in gestating cows showing minimal effects of high-zinc supplementation on gut microbiome composition, and another indicating that while zinc increased beneficial short-chain fatty acid production in a specific gut bacterium, high metal exposures can also have complex or context-dependent effects. Overall, while the direction of evidence across these reviews, systematic reviews, and preclinical studies is generally supportive of zinc's role in gut health, robust human randomized controlled trials are still needed to confirm the extent and clinical relevance of these benefits.
