Whey Protein for Immune Function

Moderate evidence 28 studies

Research suggests that whey protein may support immune function through several mechanisms, including boosting levels of glutathione (an antioxidant), immunoglobulin G (an immune protein), and reducing inflammatory signaling, with supporting evidence drawn from a randomized controlled trial in chemotherapy patients, animal studies, and multiple narrative reviews covering exercise and nutrition contexts. Studies indicate that whey protein's immune-relevant effects are often attributed to its unique amino acid composition and bioactive components such as lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin, with one animal study finding that combining whey protein with other functional ingredients produced stronger immune restoration than whey protein alone. The overall direction of the human and animal evidence leans supportive, though several studies are non-clinical in nature — including cell-culture and rodent experiments — and one laboratory study using a modified whey protein concentrate found immunosuppressive effects in isolated immune cells, though these effects disappeared under simulated digestion conditions, raising questions about real-world relevance. Reviews in this space consistently note that while the evidence is promising, significant gaps remain around dosing, individual variability, and the need for larger and more rigorous human trials before firm conclusions can be drawn.
