Walnuts for Cholesterol Management

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that walnuts may offer modest but meaningful benefits for cholesterol management, with several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses pointing in a supportive direction. A network meta-analysis comparing tree nuts found that walnut-enriched diets ranked second only to pistachios in reducing LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides compared to control diets, while a broader pooled review of dietary foods categorized walnuts among those with moderate evidence for LDL-lowering effects. A small randomized trial found that adding a modest amount of walnuts daily to statin therapy was associated with substantially lower LDL and higher HDL cholesterol, alongside reductions in proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism, and a separate trial in adults with metabolic syndrome found that walnut supplementation provided modest additional benefit beyond lifestyle counseling alone. That said, limitations are worth noting: the network meta-analysis rated its overall evidence quality as low, several of the most directly relevant studies were small or short in duration, and walnuts frequently appear as one component of broader dietary patterns like the Portfolio Diet rather than as an isolated intervention, making it difficult to attribute effects to walnuts alone.
