Vitamin D for Nutrient Absorption

Moderate evidence 40 studies

Research suggests that vitamin D plays a recurring role in nutrient absorption contexts, appearing across studies examining conditions and interventions that disrupt or impair the gut's ability to absorb micronutrients. Studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency is commonly observed alongside other micronutrient shortfalls in populations with compromised intestinal function, including people with celiac disease following a gluten-free diet, individuals with obesity, and those who have undergone bariatric surgery such as biliopancreatic diversion — with supporting evidence drawn from reviews, observational studies, and long-term surgical outcome data. A 2020 narrative review of studies in children and adolescents found that inulin, a type of dietary fiber, was associated with improved absorption of vitamins D and E, and that fructans more broadly may support a gut environment conducive to better nutrient uptake, suggesting that the gut microbiome may be a relevant factor in how well vitamin D is absorbed. However, the overall body of evidence reviewed here is largely indirect, with vitamin D appearing as one of several deficient nutrients rather than as the primary focus of absorption research, and the studies are predominantly reviews and observational in design, which limits the ability to draw firm causal conclusions about vitamin D's specific role in nutrient absorption independent of broader dietary and gut health factors.
