Vitamin D for Cancer Risk Reduction

Moderate evidence 45 studies

Research suggests that vitamin D may be associated with reduced risk for several cancers, with the most consistent evidence found for colorectal cancer, where a large pooled analysis of over 12,800 participants found that people with deficient vitamin D levels had roughly 31% higher colorectal cancer risk compared to those with adequate levels, and supportive signals also appearing for pancreatic and prostate cancers in meta-analyses and reviews. Studies indicate that genetic variation in the vitamin D receptor gene may also play a modest role in cancer susceptibility, with one meta-analysis of over 45,000 cancer cases finding a small but measurable reduction in overall cancer risk associated with certain receptor variants. However, the evidence is not uniformly positive — a 2010 review noted that very high vitamin D blood levels may actually be associated with increased risk for certain cancers, including prostate, breast, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers, suggesting a possible U-shaped relationship where both deficiency and excess carry risk. The majority of the supportive evidence comes from observational studies and meta-analyses rather than controlled trials, meaning the findings reflect associations rather than established cause and effect, and researchers caution that broad recommendations to increase vitamin D intake may not be appropriate for all individuals.
