Vitamin A (Retinol) for Reproductive Health

Preliminary evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that vitamin A intake is a meaningful concern for reproductive-age women and pregnant women, particularly in low-resource settings, though the evidence here comes primarily from observational and cross-sectional studies rather than controlled trials. A cross-sectional study of pregnant women in Ethiopia found that fewer than half were meeting recommended vitamin A intake levels, with dietary diversity emerging as the strongest predictor of adequacy, while a national nutrition survey of Vietnamese female adolescents found that girls who were stunted faced notably higher odds of also having low vitamin A status, with social and economic disadvantage compounding deficiency risk. Several of the remaining studies in this collection — including work on endometrial organoids, twin epigenetics, and hagfish genomics — touch broadly on reproductive biology but do not directly investigate vitamin A's role, and others examining protein levels and seasonal immunity are effectively neutral with respect to this nutrient. Taken together, the most relevant findings point toward vitamin A deficiency as a public health concern for pregnant women and adolescent girls in vulnerable populations, but the body of evidence linked here is limited in scope, relies heavily on observational methods, and does not establish causal relationships or support specific supplementation recommendations.
