Research suggests that turmeric and its primary active compound curcumin have well-documented antioxidant properties, with evidence spanning multiple study types including several meta-analyses pooling data from dozens of randomized controlled trials, numerous narrative reviews, and a systematic review focused on exercise-related oxidative stress. Studies indicate that curcumin supplementation is associated with measurable improvements in antioxidant markers, including increased total antioxidant capacity, elevated superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels, and reduced malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative cellular damage, with a 2023 meta-analysis drawing on 66 RCTs and a 2024 meta-analysis of 103 RCTs both supporting these findings. A consistently noted limitation across the literature is curcumin's poor bioavailability in its standard form, as the body absorbs relatively little of it on its own, though researchers have found that combining it with piperine from black pepper or using advanced delivery technologies can substantially improve absorption and likely effectiveness. Additionally, while turmeric has a long history of safe use, some reviews have flagged that certain formulations have been linked to rare cases of liver injury, suggesting that the source and preparation of turmeric products may be a relevant consideration.
