Tongkat Ali (Lj100) for Stress Relief

Preliminary evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that Tongkat Ali extract may help reduce markers of physiological and psychological stress, with the most direct evidence coming from a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in moderately stressed adults that found reductions in salivary cortisol alongside improvements in mood measures such as tension, anger, and confusion. A longer 24-week randomized trial using a combination formula found within-group improvements in mental health and vitality, though between-group differences against placebo were less consistent and appeared to vary by age, and a mechanistic animal study identified a plausible molecular pathway by which a key compound in the plant may help restore normal cortisol metabolism. Studies indicate that findings are generally supportive in direction across a review of the broader literature, but the overall evidence base remains limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and at least one trial in athletes finding no meaningful effect on hormonal or stress-related outcomes after a one-week supplementation period. Taken together, the research is preliminary and points toward a potential stress-buffering effect worth further investigation, but replication in larger, well-controlled trials is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
