Research suggests that tomatoes and their bioactive compounds — including lycopene, naringenin, fisetin, and lutein — demonstrate meaningful anti-inflammatory properties across a broad range of preclinical studies, with proposed mechanisms including suppression of the NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway, activation of the antioxidant Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, and reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8. The available evidence comes primarily from cell culture experiments, animal models, and narrative reviews rather than randomized controlled trials in humans, which is an important limitation to keep in mind when interpreting these findings. One cell-based study noted a dose-dependent complexity — specifically that tomato carotenoids like lycopene and lutein showed antioxidant effects at lower concentrations but paradoxically promoted oxidative stress at higher concentrations, even while anti-inflammatory activity continued — suggesting that the relationship between intake and effect is not straightforwardly linear. Overall, the body of literature is directionally supportive and growing, but well-designed human clinical trials are still needed before firm conclusions can be drawn about the anti-inflammatory effects of tomato consumption in people.
