Research suggests that theacrine may support subjective feelings of energy, focus, and alertness, particularly when combined with caffeine, though findings on objective performance measures are more inconsistent. The evidence base includes over a dozen studies — among them several randomized controlled trials, crossover studies, and one narrative review — most of which directionally support theacrine's energizing effects on self-reported outcomes, with a smaller subset showing mixed or null results, especially for physical performance tasks like resistance exercise and sprint performance. Studies indicate that theacrine's stimulant-like properties appear to involve adenosine receptor blockade and dopamine system engagement, similar to caffeine, and notably, animal research and one eight-week human trial found no evidence of tolerance developing with repeated use — a potentially meaningful distinction from caffeine. Limitations across the literature include small sample sizes, variable dosing protocols, frequent use of multi-ingredient products that make it difficult to isolate theacrine's individual contribution, and at least one higher-dose trial that found elevated cortisol but no meaningful improvement in subjective energy, leaving the full picture of theacrine's efficacy and optimal conditions of use still open to further investigation.
