Tart Cherry for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that tart cherry, particularly in juice form, may support improvements in sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and overall sleep quality, with several proposed mechanisms including its natural melatonin content and potential to preserve tryptophan availability by reducing the activity of enzymes that break it down. The evidence base includes a handful of randomized controlled trials, multiple narrative and systematic reviews, and one network meta-analysis, the majority of which point in a supportive direction across both general adult populations and athletes. However, the overall body of evidence remains limited and somewhat inconsistent — a 2025 systematic review of seven interventional studies found that roughly half reported significant sleep improvements while others did not, and a 2024 randomized controlled trial found no benefit from a standard powdered dose in adults with overweight and sleep problems. Studies indicate that differences in dosing, formulation, intervention length, and participant characteristics make it difficult to draw firm conclusions, and researchers consistently call for larger, more rigorously designed trials before definitive claims can be made.
