Spirulina for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that spirulina contains antioxidant-relevant compounds, with one observational study reporting improved recovery outcomes in COVID-19 patients who received a multi-ingredient nutraceutical formulation that included spirulina alongside standard care, though the small sample size, retrospective design, and multi-component nature of the supplement make it impossible to attribute any effects specifically to spirulina. A separate strain-level analysis of Limnospira, the cyanobacterium from which spirulina is derived, found meaningful variation in antioxidant compound content across geographic origins, suggesting that the antioxidant potential of spirulina products may differ depending on which strain was used — a finding with implications for research consistency and product comparability. The remaining linked studies address topics such as greenhouse gas emissions, coastal methane production, and gut microbiome metabolism of plant sugars, and do not directly investigate spirulina's antioxidant effects in humans. Overall, the available evidence from these studies is insufficient to draw firm conclusions about spirulina's antioxidant benefits in humans, and more rigorously designed studies — including controlled trials using well-characterized spirulina preparations — would be needed to evaluate this application.
