Shiitake Mushroom for Skin Health

Moderate evidence 16 studies

Research suggests that shiitake mushroom has a dual relationship with skin health, showing both potential cosmeceutical benefits and documented adverse skin reactions depending on context of use. On the supportive side, laboratory and animal studies, along with several reviews, indicate that bioactive compounds from shiitake, particularly lentinan, may inhibit enzymes involved in collagen and elastin breakdown, support wound healing through angiogenesis and immune modulation, and offer antioxidant, moisturizing, and skin-whitening properties relevant to anti-aging applications. At the same time, a substantial body of clinical evidence, including a systematic review, a classic clinical series of 51 patients, multiple case reports, and a poison control center study, consistently documents shiitake dermatitis, a flagellate erythematous skin reaction triggered by ingestion of raw or undercooked shiitake, representing a well-established adverse outcome. The overall evidence base is limited by a lack of rigorous human clinical trials for the purported cosmeceutical benefits, meaning the promising findings from in vitro and animal research have not yet been confirmed in controlled human studies, and readers should weigh both the potential benefits and the recognized risk of dermatitis when evaluating shiitake for skin-related purposes.
