Shatavari (Expanded) for Stress Relief

Moderate evidence 14 studies

Research suggests that Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) has adaptogenic and stress-relieving properties supported by a relatively consistent body of evidence spanning animal studies, mechanistic reviews, and a small number of human clinical trials. Multiple reviews dating from 1999 to 2025 classify Shatavari as a documented adaptogen that may help the body resist biological, physical, and chemical stressors through mechanisms including modulation of the HPA axis, GABAergic and serotonergic pathways, and antioxidant activity, while preclinical studies demonstrate anxiolytic effects in animal models. On the human side, two recent randomized controlled trials — one in perimenopausal women and one in women with PCOS — reported significant reductions in perceived stress scores with Shatavari supplementation compared to placebo, and a separate RCT found mood-related improvements when Shatavari was combined with Ashwagandha. However, the clinical evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and a focus on specific female populations, meaning broader conclusions about stress relief across diverse groups require larger and more rigorous trials before firm determinations can be made.
