Shatavari (Expanded) for Menopause Support

Moderate evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) may offer meaningful support for menopausal and perimenopausal symptoms, with multiple recent randomized controlled trials and double-blind studies consistently reporting reductions in hot flash frequency, overall menopausal symptom severity, and mood-related complaints, as measured by standardized tools such as the Menopause Rating Scale. Studies indicate that hormonal markers including FSH, LH, and AMH may shift favorably with supplementation, and one trial found that combining Shatavari with Ashwagandha produced greater improvements than either herb alone, though Shatavari alone also demonstrated benefit. The body of evidence is further supported by a molecular docking study proposing plausible mechanisms via interaction with estrogen and other reproductive hormone receptors, an animal model study, and a narrative review of Ayurvedic herbs in female reproductive health, all pointing in a supportive direction. However, most clinical trials to date have been small in sample size and short in duration, and the broader review literature notes that methodological rigor across this research area remains inconsistent, meaning larger and longer confirmatory trials are still needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
