Schisandra for Skin Health

Moderate evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that Schisandra and its active compounds — particularly the lignan Schisandrin B and other polyphenolic constituents — may support skin health through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin barrier-protective mechanisms, with evidence spanning cell studies, animal models, and a small number of human trials. Studies indicate that a topical Schisandra chinensis fruit extract reduced markers of atopic dermatitis-like inflammation in mice, while cell culture research found that Schisandrin B protected human skin cells from oxidative damage by activating the Nrf2 antioxidant defense pathway; one small randomized controlled trial also reported that a moisturizing cream containing Schisandra sphenanthera extract improved hydration, reduced redness, and lowered water loss in women recovering from IPL treatment. Reviews of the broader literature place Schisandra within a wider category of plant-derived ingredients with plausible roles in anti-aging, photoprotection, and skin barrier support, citing its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as the likely mechanisms. However, much of the available evidence comes from in vitro and animal studies or from small, industry-relevant trials, meaning that well-powered, independent clinical trials in humans are still needed before firm conclusions about efficacy can be drawn.
