Salmon for Anti-Inflammatory

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that salmon and salmon-derived compounds show meaningful anti-inflammatory potential across several distinct biological pathways, though the evidence base is largely preclinical rather than clinical. Studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon carry the broadest support, with a 2004 review linking them to antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects alongside cardiovascular benefits, while cell-based studies from 2015 and 2019 found that bioactive peptides isolated from salmon fin and bone byproducts significantly reduced inflammatory markers such as nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, TNF-α, and interleukin-6 in stimulated immune cells. Astaxanthin, a pigment naturally present in salmon, is supported by a 2022 review summarizing evidence for its ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species and suppress pro-inflammatory signaling, particularly in gastrointestinal contexts, and PDRN, a compound derived from salmon sperm DNA, is reviewed in 2017 as a selective adenosine A2A receptor activator with tissue-repairing and anti-inflammatory properties relevant to wound care. The overall body of evidence is promising but limited by its heavy reliance on cell culture experiments, animal models, and narrative reviews, with few randomized controlled trials or large human studies directly evaluating salmon consumption or salmon-derived compounds for inflammatory conditions, and some linked studies examined topics such as Alzheimer's disease mechanisms, tumor immunology, and vascular biology that bear no meaningful relevance to salmon's anti-inflammatory effects, underscoring the importance of interpreting this evidence with appropriate caution.
