Rosemary for Cognitive Function

Strong evidence 27 studies

Research suggests that rosemary shows promising effects on cognitive function across several study types, including randomized controlled trials, animal studies, preclinical models, and narrative reviews, with the overall direction of evidence leaning supportive. Studies indicate that both inhaled rosemary essential oil and oral rosemary extract have been associated with improvements in memory, attention, and general cognitive performance in populations ranging from healthy older adults to individuals with dementia, COPD, and diabetes, though findings are not entirely uniform. One randomized controlled trial using single doses of rosemary leaf powder found a notable dose-dependent pattern, where a low culinary-range dose improved memory speed while a high dose impaired it, and a review of plant essential oils identified specific compounds in rosemary as meaningful inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme relevant to Alzheimer's disease. Taken together, the available evidence is encouraging but still limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, variability in the form and dose of rosemary used, and a relative scarcity of large, long-term clinical trials, meaning firmer conclusions about rosemary's cognitive benefits in humans await more rigorous investigation.
