Rooibos for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) possesses meaningful antioxidant activity, attributed primarily to its unique polyphenol profile — particularly the dihydrochalcone aspalathin — with laboratory studies and animal models indicating it may help neutralize free radicals, support antioxidant enzyme activity, protect DNA from oxidative damage, and bolster the liver's defenses under conditions of oxidative stress. The available evidence consists largely of in vitro studies, animal studies, and narrative reviews, with very limited human clinical research, which means findings cannot yet be straightforwardly applied to human health outcomes. Studies indicate that the degree of antioxidant activity varies considerably depending on processing method, quality grade, production season, and whether the tea is fermented or unfermented, with fermentation generally reducing key antioxidant compounds while also lowering certain pro-oxidant activity. Notably, at least one laboratory study found that concentrated rooibos polyphenol fractions can exhibit pro-oxidant behavior under specific conditions, and researchers have cautioned that assuming polyphenol-rich extracts are uniformly beneficial — particularly in supplement form — may be an oversimplification that warrants further investigation.
