Rehmannia for Anemia

Research suggests that Rehmannia glutinosa and formulas containing it have demonstrated several mechanisms potentially relevant to anemia, including stimulating red blood cell production, supporting bone marrow function, raising erythropoietin levels, and modulating inflammatory pathways involved in blood cell regulation. Studies indicate that a polysaccharide fraction of Rehmannia improved blood cell counts in a mouse model of aplastic anemia by suppressing inflammatory signaling, while a separate animal study found that rice wine-processed Rehmannia root enhanced hematopoiesis, and a multi-herb formula containing Rehmannia outperformed commercial iron supplements in a rat hemorrhagic anemia model without apparent gastrointestinal side effects. The available evidence consists predominantly of preclinical animal and cell studies, computational analyses, and narrative reviews of traditional formulas, with very limited clinical trial data directly evaluating Rehmannia for anemia; one small randomized controlled trial in kidney disease patients found no significant difference in anemia outcomes when a Rehmannia-containing formula was added to standard care. Overall, while the preclinical findings are suggestive and align with Rehmannia's longstanding traditional use for blood-related conditions, the absence of robust human clinical trials means the evidence remains preliminary and further research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
