Raw Garlic (Remedy) for Ear Health

Moderate evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that garlic and its bioactive compounds may have meaningful antimicrobial and antifungal properties relevant to ear health, with laboratory studies consistently demonstrating activity against bacteria, yeasts, and molds associated with conditions such as otomycosis, otitis media, and chronic ear infections. Studies indicate that specific garlic-derived compounds — particularly allicin and s-allyl cysteine — show inhibitory effects against common ear pathogens at relatively low concentrations, and one small clinical trial reported that a garlic-based liquid ear drop formulation compared favorably to a standard antibiotic solution for chronic suppurative otitis media, though that study was very small and lacked rigorous controls. Two randomized controlled trials evaluated a multi-herb ear drop formula containing garlic alongside other botanicals in children with ear pain and found it performed comparably to conventional anesthetic drops, though isolating garlic's specific contribution from the other ingredients in those formulas is not possible. Overall, the body of evidence is preliminary and skewed toward laboratory and small observational studies, with the clinical trials being limited in size and scope, so while findings are consistently supportive in direction, they are not yet sufficient to draw firm conclusions about garlic as a standalone ear treatment.
