Potassium for Hydration

Research suggests that potassium, as a component of electrolyte-containing beverages, may play a meaningful role in supporting fluid retention and hydration status. The most directly relevant evidence comes from a randomized controlled trial of 19 healthy young adults, which found that electrolyte content was the single largest contributor to a beverage's hydration properties, as measured by the Beverage Hydration Index, though electrolytes alone did not consistently outperform water without the addition of carbohydrates or other compounds. Several other studies in this collection touch on potassium's relationship to hydration only indirectly, primarily through investigations of potassium ion transport in cell membrane channels, cement chemistry, and clinical contexts such as tumor lysis syndrome and kidney stone management, none of which speak directly to everyday hydration in healthy individuals. Studies indicate that the evidence base for potassium specifically as a hydration aid in general populations remains limited, with the available human trial relying on a small sample size, and broader conclusions about electrolyte-driven fluid balance should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
