Plantain (Plantago) for Cough Relief

Research suggests that Plantago species, particularly Plantago major and Plantago lanceolata, have meaningful support for cough relief across a range of study types, including multiple randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, and several narrative and systematic reviews, all pointing in a consistent supportive direction. Studies indicate that preparations containing Plantago major extract reduced cough severity and frequency in both adults with acute and chronic bronchitis and children when tested against placebo conditions, while Plantago lanceolata has been identified in the literature as a traditional demulcent for dry cough with supporting safety data. The body of evidence spans several decades, from a 1982 clinical trial reporting subjective improvement in 80% of chronic bronchitis patients to more recent controlled trials published through 2024, lending some historical depth to the findings. That said, several of the trials tested plantain as part of multi-ingredient formulations rather than as an isolated compound, and some studies are characterized as narrative reviews or stability analyses rather than high-powered efficacy trials, which limits the strength of conclusions that can be drawn about plantain as a standalone intervention.
