Peppermint Tea for Nausea Relief

Strong evidence 18 studies

Research suggests that peppermint — primarily studied in the form of inhaled essential oil aromatherapy, though also examined as an extract taken orally — may help reduce nausea across a range of clinical contexts, including postoperative recovery, chemotherapy treatment, and general hospital care. The body of evidence includes multiple randomized controlled trials, two systematic reviews and a meta-analysis, and several observational studies, the large majority of which report statistically significant reductions in nausea severity in groups using peppermint compared to standard care or placebo controls; findings span diverse patient populations including surgical patients, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and children. That said, important limitations temper these conclusions: one double-blind trial found no statistically significant benefit for pregnancy-related nausea, the 2024 meta-analysis rated the overall quality of postoperative evidence as low due to variability across studies and potential biases, several of the supportive trials involved small sample sizes or non-standard randomization methods, and some studies examined peppermint as part of multi-oil blends rather than in isolation, making it difficult to attribute effects to peppermint alone. Studies indicate the evidence is promising enough to warrant continued investigation, but researchers across multiple reviews consistently note that larger, more rigorously standardized trials are needed before broad conclusions can be drawn.
