Neem for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 5 studies

Research suggests that neem may have immunomodulatory properties, with several preclinical studies indicating it can stimulate certain branches of immune activity, though the evidence is largely limited to animal models and laboratory experiments rather than human clinical trials. A mouse study found that neem leaf extract appeared to enhance T-cell populations and lymphocyte activity in a way that suppressed tumor growth when given prophylactically, and a separate study on pregnant ewes reported improvements in blood protein and red blood cell counts without signs of toxicity. Laboratory work on azadirachtin, a compound derived from neem, showed potential antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects against SARS-CoV-2 enzymes and associated cytokines, suggesting a possible dual role in supporting immune defense while dampening excessive inflammatory responses. However, findings are mixed in at least one study, which found that neem extract suppressed B-cell populations while other plants in the same experiment stimulated immune activity, underscoring that neem's effects on different arms of the immune system may be complex and context-dependent. The available evidence consists primarily of animal studies, in vitro experiments, and one narrative review, with no robust human clinical trial data, so conclusions about immune effects in people remain premature.
