Research suggests that mullein, as part of a multi-herb ear drop formulation, may help reduce ear pain associated with acute otitis media in children. Two randomized controlled trials found that a naturopathic herbal blend containing mullein, garlic, calendula, and other botanicals performed comparably to conventional anesthetic ear drops in managing ear pain over a three-day period. However, a key limitation of both studies is that mullein was never tested in isolation, making it impossible to attribute any observed effects to mullein specifically rather than to the other ingredients or even the olive oil base. Additionally, one of the trials estimated that roughly 80% of pain reduction was simply due to the natural, self-limiting course of the condition over time, which further complicates interpretation of the findings.
