Molecular Hydrogen for Cognitive Function

Preliminary evidence 26 studies

Research suggests that molecular hydrogen may support cognitive function across a range of injury and disease contexts, with the majority of available studies pointing in a supportive direction. The evidence base consists predominantly of animal studies — including mouse models of sepsis-associated encephalopathy, traumatic brain injury, cerebral ischemia, Alzheimer's disease, and age-related neurodegeneration — with proposed mechanisms including reduction of oxidative stress, suppression of neuroinflammation, preservation of blood-brain barrier integrity, and epigenetic upregulation of BDNF, a protein critical for memory and learning. A 2025 review of the limited human clinical trial literature found preliminary signals for improved executive function, alertness, and memory across several populations, though the authors emphasized that the human evidence base remains small and insufficiently robust to draw firm conclusions. Notably, one animal study found cognitive benefits only in female mice with Alzheimer's pathology, suggesting that outcomes may vary by sex, and a handful of included studies were unrelated to molecular hydrogen, underscoring that the field is still in relatively early stages and that well-designed human trials are needed before stronger conclusions can be drawn.
