Research suggests that Manuka honey and related medicinal honeys show meaningful promise for wound healing applications, supported by a range of study types including one randomized controlled trial in critically ill children that found honey dressings accelerated healing compared to standard care, alongside retrospective case series, laboratory studies, and reviews pointing to antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair-supporting properties. Studies indicate particular interest in novel delivery formats such as nanofiber dressings, 3D-printed patches, and composite scaffolds incorporating Manuka honey, with laboratory findings generally supporting its role in inhibiting common wound-infecting bacteria and promoting skin cell growth. However, the evidence base carries notable limitations and mixed findings: one ex vivo burn study found that pure Manuka honey actually inhibited skin cell regrowth, another raised theoretical concerns about its high methylglyoxal content potentially worsening outcomes in diabetic wounds, a burn pain study found silver sulfadiazine associated with lower pain scores, and some scaffold-based delivery systems appeared to reduce honey's direct antibacterial potency. Taken together, the research is encouraging but largely preliminary, with most studies being small, short-term, or conducted in laboratory settings, and researchers across multiple papers consistently call for larger, well-controlled clinical trials before broader conclusions can be drawn.
