Magnesium for Bone Health

Strong evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that magnesium plays a meaningful role in supporting bone health, with evidence spanning narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and observational studies consistently pointing in a supportive direction. Studies indicate that lower magnesium intake and blood levels are associated with reduced bone mineral density and higher fracture risk, with one 2022 meta-analysis of adults aged 60 and older finding a statistically significant positive association between higher magnesium intake and hip bone mineral density specifically. A 2021 narrative review drawing on 28 studies reported that intervention trials using magnesium supplementation showed benefits for bone mineral density and fracture risk across all trials examined, and multiple reviews also highlight magnesium's likely interactions with other bone-relevant nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and protein, suggesting its effects may be part of a broader nutritional picture rather than isolated. That said, researchers consistently note that the current evidence base has important limitations — including small sample sizes, short study durations, and a predominance of observational rather than experimental designs — and call for larger, longer-term randomized controlled trials before firm conclusions about optimal intake strategies can be drawn.
