Research suggests that magnesium plays a meaningful role in blood pressure regulation through several interconnected biological pathways, including modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, reduction of oxidative stress and vascular inflammation, regulation of catecholamine levels, and influence over calcium and mineral balance — with a 2025 computational modeling study finding that magnesium deficiency had the most pronounced blood pressure-raising effect among the nutrient deficiencies it tested. The available evidence comes from a range of source types, including mechanistic reviews, animal studies, epidemiological analyses, and at least one randomized controlled trial, with the majority pointing in a supportive direction, though findings are not uniformly consistent. Notably, the 1998 randomized controlled trial in normotensive women found that magnesium supplementation alone did not produce meaningful blood pressure reductions, and a 1994 review cautioned that nutrients like magnesium do not act in isolation, emphasizing that interactions with sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride complicate the picture considerably. Studies indicate that while the biological rationale for magnesium's role in blood pressure regulation is well-supported at a mechanistic level, the clinical evidence from intervention trials is less conclusive, and researchers continue to call for better methods of assessing magnesium status and more targeted studies to clarify when and for whom supplementation may be beneficial.
