L-Glutamine for Exercise Recovery

Preliminary evidence 16 studies

Research suggests that L-glutamine may play a modest role in supporting muscle glutamine and protein levels during recovery from exhaustive exercise, based primarily on animal studies showing that supplementation — particularly in dipeptide form — helped preserve muscle glutamine concentrations in the post-exercise period compared to no supplementation. One small randomized controlled trial in male boxers found that L-glutamine combined with alkaline water produced changes in certain salivary stress and hormonal markers, though neither supplement alone did so, and the very small sample size makes these findings difficult to interpret with confidence. The available human evidence is extremely limited, and the majority of studies provided in this review are not directly relevant to L-glutamine or exercise recovery, covering unrelated topics such as kidney disease, muscular dystrophy, and COVID-19, which substantially narrows the conclusions that can be drawn. Overall, the research base specific to L-glutamine for exercise recovery remains thin and largely preclinical, meaning stronger and larger human trials would be needed before firm conclusions about its effectiveness can be made.
