Jujube (Red Date) for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), particularly its seeds, may support sleep quality through mechanisms involving the brain's GABA and serotonin signaling systems, with animal studies, traditional Chinese medicine reviews, and a meta-analysis of 19 controlled trials collectively pointing in a supportive direction. Studies indicate that jujube-containing formulas have shown effects on sleep onset, sleep duration, and non-REM sleep in rodent models, and that multi-herb clinical formulas featuring jujube as a key ingredient have performed comparably to conventional sleep medications in some analyses while producing fewer side effects. However, the evidence has notable limitations: most mechanistic findings come from animal and insect models rather than human trials, the few human studies available are small or use multi-ingredient combinations that make it difficult to isolate jujube's specific contribution, and one double-blind placebo-controlled trial found no significant difference between a jujube-containing supplement and placebo, with researchers attributing the null result partly to a strong placebo response. Reviewers across multiple papers consistently call for larger, more rigorously designed human trials before jujube can be confidently recommended as a standalone sleep aid.
