Hops for Menopause Support

Moderate evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that hops and its bioactive compounds — particularly 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), one of the most potent plant-derived estrogens identified — may have biological relevance to menopausal symptom management, primarily through estrogen receptor activity, though the overall clinical evidence remains limited and mixed. Laboratory and animal studies indicate that isolated 8-PN demonstrates meaningful estrogenic effects, including binding to estrogen receptors and influencing estrogen metabolism in ways that may favor safer metabolic pathways, while whole hops extracts have shown less consistent hormonal activity in animal models. The available human evidence comes largely from a small uncontrolled pilot study using hops as part of a multi-ingredient formula, and broader reviews have concluded that hops is not yet sufficiently supported by clinical trial data to draw firm conclusions about effectiveness for menopausal symptoms. Safety considerations add further complexity, as studies indicate that hop compounds may inhibit liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing many common medications, and while one animal study found no promotion of breast tumor growth, the estrogenic activity of 8-PN in breast tissue means questions about long-term safety have not been resolved, underscoring the need for more rigorous human research.
