Hibiscus for Cholesterol Management

Preliminary evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that hibiscus species — particularly Hibiscus sabdariffa — may have modest beneficial effects on certain lipid markers, though the overall evidence is mixed and largely preliminary. A 2020 meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials found significant reductions in LDL cholesterol and fasting blood glucose, but no significant changes in total cholesterol, HDL, or triglycerides, and the authors noted possible publication bias complicating the total cholesterol findings; a small human trial from 2017 similarly observed within-group reductions in LDL and total cholesterol among hibiscus tea drinkers that did not reach statistical significance when compared directly to placebo. Studies indicate more consistently favorable lipid outcomes in animal models, where various hibiscus species and extracts reduced total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides in rats with obesity, diabetes, or high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia, with one mouse study also pointing to a potential gut microbiome mechanism. The body of evidence as a whole is limited by a heavy reliance on animal studies that cannot be directly extrapolated to humans, small sample sizes in available human trials, and a 90-day rat safety study raising questions about potential kidney-related effects with prolonged use, all of which underscores the need for larger and longer human clinical trials before firm conclusions can be drawn.
