Flaxseed (Remedy) for Cholesterol Management

Strong evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that flaxseed and its components — including its fiber, lignans, and alpha-linolenic acid — may offer modest benefits for cholesterol and related lipid markers, with several randomized controlled trials and reviews reporting reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides across populations including people with type 2 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, and overweight adults. A 2022 meta-analysis found that higher intake of ALA, the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid concentrated in flaxseed, was associated with a 10–20% lower risk of cardiovascular disease alongside improvements in cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and multiple reviews identify flaxseed's bioactive compounds as plausible contributors to these effects. However, the evidence is not uniformly positive — a trial in children found unfavorable shifts in HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, a study in menopausal women concluded flaxseed fell meaningfully short of hormone replacement therapy in improving cardiovascular-related lipid markers, and a small study in older adults with diabetes found limited statistically significant cholesterol effects after correcting for multiple comparisons. Overall, the body of evidence leans in a supportive direction but is marked by variability in study populations, flaxseed forms, and doses, and most researchers note that larger and more rigorous trials are needed before strong conclusions can be drawn.
