Flaxseed (Food) for Hormonal Balance

Strong evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that flaxseed and its components — particularly lignans and the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid — may influence several aspects of hormonal balance, with the most consistent human evidence coming from randomized controlled trials showing effects on menstrual cycle parameters, estrogen metabolism, and adiponectin levels in women. A 1993 crossover trial found flaxseed supplementation was associated with longer luteal phases and more favorable progesterone-to-estradiol ratios in healthy cycling women, while a 1999 RCT in postmenopausal women found dose-dependent shifts in urinary estrogen metabolites toward a potentially more favorable ratio, and a 2021 RCT in overweight women reported significant increases in adiponectin alongside reductions in abdominal measurements. Supporting animal studies — including rat models of PCOS, seed cycling experiments, and various livestock investigations — generally reinforce the idea that flaxseed's phytoestrogens and fatty acids interact with hormonal and metabolic pathways, though some animal research on male reproductive parameters showed mixed findings, including reductions in testosterone and libido despite preserved fertility outcomes. The overall body of evidence is limited by a reliance on animal models, small human trial sizes, short durations, and the fact that most studies measure biomarkers rather than longer-term clinical outcomes, so the practical significance of these hormonal shifts for human health remains an open question.
