Eggs for Weight Management

Moderate evidence 23 studies

Research suggests that eggs may support weight management efforts, particularly when consumed as part of a calorie-controlled diet. A randomized controlled trial found that overweight adults who ate an egg-based breakfast alongside a reduced-calorie diet lost meaningfully more weight than those eating a calorie-matched bagel breakfast under the same dietary restriction, though egg consumption alone — without calorie reduction — did not produce significant weight loss on its own. A 2023 review of high-quality evidence, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, further reported that eggs may support muscle protein synthesis, reduce fat mass, and improve post-meal satiety, all of which could be relevant to weight management, and a separate clinical trial in adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes found that frequent egg consumers reported greater feelings of fullness after breakfast compared to low egg consumers. Taken together, the available evidence tentatively supports a role for eggs in weight management contexts, though researchers note that dietary pattern, overall caloric intake, and individual health circumstances appear to matter considerably, and the broader literature contains mixed findings that warrant cautious interpretation.
