Eggs for Eye Health

Preliminary evidence 25 studies

Research suggests that eggs may support eye health primarily through their content of lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that concentrate in the retina and are associated with protection against age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. The most directly relevant human evidence comes from a randomized controlled trial finding that consuming enriched eggs — boosted with extra lutein, zeaxanthin, and DHA — produced greater increases in macular pigment optical density and blood carotenoid levels compared to standard eggs, with both egg types showing modest benefits. Supporting this, review articles consistently report associations between higher lutein and zeaxanthin intake and reduced risk of common age-related eye conditions, and several production-focused studies demonstrate that hen diets incorporating carotenoid-rich feed ingredients such as stinging nettle, stevia, orange corn, or carrot leaves can meaningfully increase the carotenoid content of egg yolks, potentially making eggs a more potent dietary source. It is worth noting that several studies in this body of literature focus on agricultural methods or animal models rather than direct human outcomes, and some included publications are not relevant to eggs or eye health at all, so the human clinical evidence base remains relatively limited and further well-designed trials would be needed to draw firm conclusions.
