Dong Quai for Anemia

Preliminary evidence 22 studies

Research suggests that Angelica sinensis polysaccharides (ASP) demonstrate consistent hematopoietic effects across multiple animal models of anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, chemotherapy-induced anemia, aplastic anemia, anemia of chronic inflammation, and anemia associated with pregnancy. Studies indicate that proposed mechanisms include stimulation of erythropoiesis through elevated erythropoietin and hematopoietic growth factors, modulation of iron metabolism via the hepcidin-ferroportin axis, suppression of inflammatory signaling pathways such as IL-6/JAK2/STAT3, and protection of bone marrow stem cells from chemotherapy-related damage. The available body of evidence consists almost entirely of preclinical animal studies and laboratory experiments, with one clinical study in aplastic anemia patients noted, meaning findings have not yet been robustly validated in large-scale human trials. Readers should be aware that results in animal models do not always translate to human outcomes, and the research, while directionally consistent and supportive, remains at a relatively early translational stage.
