Research suggests that dihydromyricetin may help reduce anxiety-related behaviors in animal models by addressing underlying biological mechanisms rather than anxiety symptoms directly. Both available studies are preclinical animal experiments — not human clinical trials — and they indicate that DHM may counteract anxiety-like states by restoring mitochondrial energy production in the brain disrupted by social isolation, and by reducing gut and brain inflammation, supporting the hippocampus, and improving microbiome composition in a model of inflammatory bowel disease-associated anxiety. The general direction of this limited evidence is supportive, but the research base is small and entirely restricted to mouse models, meaning findings cannot yet be applied to human experience or clinical use. Considerably more research, including human trials, would be needed before any conclusions can be drawn about DHM's effectiveness for anxiety relief in people.
