Deer Velvet Antler for Growth Hormone Support

Preliminary evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that deer velvet antler has not been demonstrated to meaningfully support growth hormone levels in humans based on the available clinical evidence. The one randomized controlled trial in this set — testing elk velvet antler supplementation in competitive rowers over ten weeks — found no significant differences in growth hormone, testosterone, or cortisol responses compared to placebo, with both groups improving similarly through training alone. The remaining studies are observational or mechanistic in nature and focus primarily on the internal biology of antler growth in deer themselves, identifying testosterone, IGF-1, prolactin, estradiol, and parathyroid hormone-related peptide as regulators of the antler cycle — findings that describe how antlers grow in deer, not how velvet antler supplementation affects hormones in humans. The body of evidence is therefore quite limited for this specific application, consisting of a single small RCT alongside largely animal-based research, and readers should be cautious about drawing conclusions regarding human growth hormone support from this literature.
